Downtown Jackson Mural Tour
Jackson is home to some of the best mural artists in West Tennessee! In the past few years, the Mayor’s Public Art Initiative, and through efforts of many others like Our Jackson Home’s Artist in Residence program, there has been an explosion of new art popping up in and around Jackson. Whether you are joining us on this virtual tour, or going on adventure of your own, we hope you find time to explore our hometown in a new light by supporting these amazing artists. If you go on your own art-fueled adventure, we would love to see your photos! Use the hashtag #OJHmuraltour on Instagram to support local artists.
A - “Hope Will Lead Us There”
B - “Love the One in Front of You”
C - Rifa’s Garden Mural
All three of Rifa’s murals were painted by Erin Miller Wray, who specializes in “hand painted visual branding.” A Memphis native, Wray graduated from the University of Tennessee and creates art for everything from the NBA, Walmart, and you guessed it, Rifa! We are honored to have her art beautifying our hometown.
D - “Love Your Neighborhood”
“Love your Neighborhood” was created by our very own Courtney Searcy! Courtney is our Program Director here at Our Jackson Home. This piece was created as part of the Mayor’s Public Art Initiative, which was launched in 2019 and seeks to “engage more artists, both established and emerging, in the work of creative place-making.”
E - “731”
Also a part of the Mayor’s Public Art Initiative, “731” was painted by Jonathan and Sarah Cagle and portrays many different aspects of West Tennessee life. Located at Southwest Tennessee Development District building, this mural was sponsored by Southwest, West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation and Voya Financial Advisors of Jackson.
F - “Jackson Postcard”
Styled like a vintage postcard, this mural was created by Katie Howertown, but showcases art by seven other artists. Nestled onto the side of ComeUnity Cafe, “Jackson Postcard” features Jackson landmarks like the Bemis mill, the farmer’s market, the Greyhound bus station, the Jackson Generals stadium, as well as other themes. More about this mural.
G - AVA’S “UNITY” MURAL
At just nine years old, Ava Ingle painted her “Unity” mural on the utility box on the corner of East Main Street and Liberty. Also a part of the Public Art Initiative, Ava spent her fall break from Trinity Christian Academy creating her masterpiece. Ava spent over five hours creating her art on both sides of the utility box, creating an otherwise dull canvas into a beautiful piece of art. More about this mural.
H - “WINGS OF HOPE”
When building owner Frank McMeen decided to commission a mural, his goal was to create an interactive piece for the people of Jackson. James Yelverton brought his vision to life with this 100 hour artwork, symbolizing hope and unity in our hometown. More about this mural
I - WENDY’S MURAL AT THE LOST RESERVE
Created as part of Our Jackson Home’s Artist in Residence program, Wendy Hailey Kim created her mural in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, turning a grey period in our lives into a colorful message of hope.
