Theatre Review: Guys & Dolls
The Jackson Theatre Guild initiates the 2016-2017 season with the musical Guys and Dolls, now playing at The Ned.
Set in colorful New York, the conflict between the police and the illegal gambling ring of craps is at an all time high. Nathan Detroit, played by Billy Worboys, is famous for setting up secret meeting places to shoot craps. But with the police on high alert, he must come up with $1,000 cash in order to secure a location.
Unable to produce the cash, he attempts to rig a bet against Sky Masterson, played by AJ Massey, well known for his luck and large bets.
Nathan bets Sky $1,000 that he can find a doll that even the charismatic Sky can't get to go to Havana with him. Sky takes the bet, only to discover that the doll is Sarah Brown, played by Alyssa Marshall, head of the local missionary group. Her sole purpose is to convert the gambling sinners in New York.
This love story has all the elements needed to bring laughter to your July weekend—a live orchestra, great acting, song, and dance.
The Theatre Guild has once again brought together a beautiful set and talented cast to perform for Jackson. The plot revolves around two couples, played by Alyssa Marshall, AJ Massey, Erica Davidson, and Billy Worboys. All of their vocals blend beautifully, bringing a harmony on stage that matches their romances.
Come support the Jackson Theatre Guild this weekend and enjoy the show. Times are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Sunday. Visit their website for more information. And it's not too late to purchase your season tickets while you're there!
After graduating from Union University, Renae Adelsberger and her husband Kevin decided to make Jackson their home due to their love for their church, nonprofits, local businesses, and abundance of Sonic drive-ins. You can read more from Renae at www.pedestriangod.com.
Photographer Kevin Adelsberger and his wife Renae moved to Jackson for college (proud Union alumni) and have stayed every since. Jackson has since taken hold of Kevin’s heart, and he looks forward to continuing to grow with the city. Kevin opened Adelsberger Marketing in 2014 and saw working with Our Jackson Home as a way that he could serve the city he loves. Kevin and Renae are members of First Baptist Church and volunteer with the youth group there and with Madison County CASA.
